Playing w/ Boxes & Tweaking Knobs

Posted in Music on October 31, 2009 by trapperKeeper

Here are some recent sonic experiments.  They are still raw, but they were recorded live.  I am still working on properly integrating the electribes into ableton.  For now, I feel it is more important to work out the sounds, write patterns, and practice those patterns.  Things are coming together.  Baby steps.

Beware of the Whispering Winds of Shit (Shit Blizzard)

Happy Devil’s Night.  In Detroit, Devil’s Night is very real and not very cool, although there are sections of the city that could be burned down with no real loss to anyone.  I think I am going out as Officer/Trailer Park Supervisor Jim Lahey.  In honor of TPB and shit analogies, here is Jim “Shit” Lahey.

Here are some photos, some of which have been transformed, from my current neighborhood of Queen Anne.  My friend and I had some nice laughs out on our stroll through the neighborhood.  As we were enjoying some late night pizza, a street person walked up to us.  Expecting a request for change or food, we were totally surprised by what came out of the gentleman’s mouth.  “Do you have any ketchup?”  And he wasn’t eating french fries or anything requiring ketchup.  I guess he had a hankering for Ronald Reagan’s favorite vegetable.  Unfortunately, we were unable to help him out, so we sent him to Dick’s.  On the way up the hill, we encountered an older middle-aged man sprawled out in some bushes.  Inquiring if he was alright, he matter-of-factly responded “Yep, just crawling out of the bushes.”  People are strange.

Tunnel of Lost Boys

Photography, music, and life have been going well.  Also, I’ve been coming up with some ideas for new photo projects and scheming up some hustles, such as selling photographs and designing a better trailer park boys dirty burger shirt than the one currently being sold, to get some extra cheddar coming in.  I still need to upgrade my camera gear and get a video camera.  Working a typical job most of the days of the week isn’t even too feasible right now.  Plus, that type of lifestyle interferes with practicing music and photography, in addition to some of my other interests.  I want to support myself as an audio/visual man and artist.  Thus, I view all the work I’m doing right now as graduate school.  Anyhow, I am supposed to be up relatively early tomorrow for a walk, so I leave you with the photos from the tunnel party that I’ve went through so far.

Funk Is Its’ Own Reward

CD-FunkadelicNothingButTheFunk

I’ve been thinking about what to do with the blog besides post my visual work and the weekly PFunk post.  Currently, I have no desire to write multiple days a week about records.  I’ve been busy working on my own music and just don’t have anymore mental energy to expend on music.  A while back I started writing a philosophy of funk, but the idea got pushed aside for a variety of reasons.  However, the other night an idea struck concerning the mix of philosophy and funk.  Influenced by the format of The Book of Tao, I’ve decided to lay down the way of the Funk.  I’m still not sure exactly what it will entail besides a short, funk-based quotation and a short illumination on the concept within the quote.  Time will be needed for research and development, but I hope to have the feature up and running soon.  I can always start out mining the rich vein of the PFunk empire.

I’ve also gotten back on the zombies a bit.  Getting out to the zombie film fest helped spark the fire.  My friend’s desire to take a bunch of zombie photographs also helps.  During the long, kinda rainy fall/winter, I would like to spend some time getting through hordes of unwatched movies and writing some words about the flesh eaters.  I feel these are sustainable goals for the blog.  My idea to post and write about a bunch of different music each week was just not feasible.  By keeping it simple and close to the heart (funk, photos, zombies), I can make it work and not cut into my other interests too much.  Check back soon.

Look Ma, I Can Paint

I’ve viewed my camera as a paintbrush since I starting taking pictures a little over two years ago. At least some of that has to do with the fact that I have no drawing ability whatsoever.  There are some photos I’ve taken that have been transformed nicely with minimal tweaking.  The more work you do on the shoot, the less you have to do in the lab.  Still, I recently got a new plug-in that is very useful in really turning photographs into paintings.  I haven’t had a lot of time to use it on much yet, but here a few examples of what can be done with imagination and working limbs.

Teeter Totter

Posted in Photos on October 21, 2009 by trapperKeeper

Some photos from a trip to Discovery earlier this October.  The sky held a gorgeous blue that contrasted nicely with the rain refreshed green of the trees.  Big wooden planks can double as a teeter totter, as my friends illustrate.
