Must Hear LP Thursday: The Mail Must Go Through (Wait A Minute Mrs. Postman)

Today on Must Hear LP Thursday, I have a special delivery for your ear drums, the rare grooves of The Cult’s (not to be confused with the ’80s English rockers) The Mail Must Go Through (1975). I could find no information on this album. Regardless, The Mail Must Go Through is a short, but funky album of mystery worth a spin. The first half of the album is mostly instrumental, but vocals are present on the final five songs. Initially intrigued by the name and lack of information surrounding the record, my attention was perked when I saw the cover art. I am a sucker for album covers with naked females. I dug this one up on the internet, but if I could afford to purchase vinyl I certainly would have grabbed The Mail Must Go Through just based on the cover.

Update: I found out a little bit of info about the project on a record collector site. It appears that it cannot be had for less than $100 US. It is one of the rarest West Coast indie funk LPs, The Cult was a creation of Cholly Williams; The Mail Must Go Through was recorded in 4 different Hollywood studios. There is another version of the cover, which features a man, decked out in colonial time clothing, on the back of a horse.

The Mail Must Go Through commences with “Cult Theme,” a guitar and horn powered instrumental, the Cult unleash their sound.

“Rider” takes you on a laid-back, mellow journey.

Funky guitar is complimented by horns on “Back Pay.”

Vocals pop up beginning on “The Mail Must Go Through,” which peddles the same funky sound found on “Back Pay.”

“Back Pay (Vocal)” is just the instrumental version of the song with vocals thrown over the mix.

Slowing it down on “It’s Time,” the Cult express the sentiment that it’s time to make a move and be you.

Finishing with “Don’t Give Up,” which has a funky, but cleaner, sound than their heavier funk cuts, the Cult dissipate into obscurity.
